Lifelong Learning Entitlement Applications Now Open in England

Applications for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) opened on 30 October 2026, according to GOV.UK. The Lifelong Learning Entitlement applications cover students in England starting undergraduate or certain postgraduate courses between 1 January 2027 and 31 August 2027.

In this article

Who can apply

GOV.UK says the window is for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 and up to 31 August 2027. Applications for the 2027/28 academic year go live in spring 2027. Applicants need a GOV.UK One Login account.

How much you can borrow

For first-time users, the standard tuition fee loan is up to £39,160, which GOV.UK equates to about 480 credits. Maintenance loans are up to £15,415 per course year.

Repayment terms

Loans are repaid under Repayment Plan 5. GOV.UK says any outstanding balance is cancelled 40 years after the April you are first due to start repaying.

Example: a career changer

As an illustration, not a real case: a Colombian chef living in England who wants to retrain in a degree-level course starting in spring 2027 would first need to confirm eligibility on the GOV.UK student finance pages, because the announcement does not list residency or immigration conditions. Anyone planning study around visa rules can check options with our visa eligibility checker. For other funding deadlines, see our guides to the Chevening timetable and Gates Cambridge deadlines.

What happens next

Applicants for early 2027 starts can apply now. Those aiming for September 2027 should wait for the spring 2027 opening of the 2027/28 round.

Commonwealth Fellowships 2027: Apply by 5 November

Applications for Commonwealth Fellowships 2027 close on Thursday 5 November 2026 at 16:00 GMT, according to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. The fellowships are for mid-career professionals and academics from eligible Commonwealth countries, not for degree study. The page says applications are open through the Commission’s own form only.

Contents

What is new this round

From 2026/27 the Commission has launched a Commonwealth Fellowship Programme with two strands: Professional Fellowships and a new Academic Fellowships strand. It says it provisionally plans around 12 fellowships in total. Fellowships begin in March 2027 and last up to three months, hosted by named UK universities with fixed start dates from 1 March 2027.

Who can apply

Candidates must be citizens of an eligible Commonwealth country other than the UK, permanently resident there, and not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Professional Fellows need five years of relevant work experience; Academic Fellows need a PhD and university employment. Two references are required, and anyone who held a Commonwealth Fellowship in the last five years is excluded. The page lists countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Cyprus, Malta and several Caribbean states, and each host programme sets its own country limits, so check the page for yours.

What is paid

The page states, at 2025/26 rates, a return airfare, reimbursement of the standard visa fee, a stipend of £2,218 a month (£2,753 in the London area) and an arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09. Extra fees of up to £1,000 or £2,000 can be approved depending on length. Rates for 2026/27 may differ, and fellows cannot hold another award covering the same costs.

An example applicant

As an illustration, not a real case: a Singaporean policy specialist with six years in a public agency would apply on the Professional strand, choose a host programme matching their field, and line up two referees now. Students seeking a full degree should see our guides to the Gates Cambridge deadlines and Chevening timeline, and can test their route with the visa eligibility checker.

Before the deadline

With six days left, confirm your country is on the eligible list, pick a host programme, contact referees, and submit through the Commission’s form only. Late applications are not mentioned as accepted on the page. Watch the official site for any change.

Fellowship questions

When is the deadline?

Thursday 5 November 2026 at 16:00 GMT.

Is this a degree scholarship?

When do fellowships start?

March 2027, with fixed host start dates from 1 March 2027.

How many fellowships are planned?

Provisionally around 12 in total.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027: Deadlines of 8 Dec and 6 Jan

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027 round for most international applicants closes on either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course, according to the scholarship’s official application timeline. The earlier US-resident round closed on 14 October 2026, so the dates below matter mainly to applicants from outside the USA. Everything in this article comes from the official pages we read; check the University of Cambridge course directory before you apply.

Contents

The deadlines

Round 2, for all eligible applicants other than US citizens living in the USA, opened on 11 September 2026. The deadline is either Tuesday 8 December 2026 or Wednesday 6 January 2027, depending on your course; the timeline tells applicants to check the Course Funding Deadline in the University Course Directory. The timeline says most applicants fall into this later round, which is aligned with the University’s postgraduate funding competition.

Who can apply

According to the eligibility page, you must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom. US citizens who live in the USA had to apply in the October round and cannot apply later, while US citizens studying, working or living overseas at the time of application should apply in the later round. The pages we read do not describe the selection criteria or what the scholarship pays for, so check those pages on the official site.

Which courses count

Eligible courses are PhD study (full-time, with part-time PhD funding in a pilot scheme), the full-time MLitt and one-year full-time postgraduate courses, with some exceptions. Undergraduate degrees, MASt courses, part-time degrees other than the PhD and professional or non-standard degrees such as the MBA, PGCE and MD are excluded. Current Cambridge students can apply for a new postgraduate course but not for funding to finish one already started, and current Gates Cambridge Scholars can apply for a second scholarship for a new degree.

What happens after you apply

For Round 2, departmental ranking runs from December to February, outcomes are notified by 11:59pm UK time on Monday 8 March 2027, and the panel reviews cases on 22 and 23 March 2027. Scholarship offers follow by early April 2027, and candidates must accept within 72 hours of an offer.

A worked example

As an illustration, not a real case: an Indian mechanical engineer applying for a one-year MPhil should look up the course’s Course Funding Deadline first, because it decides whether the date is 8 December or 6 January, then plan documents backwards from it. A student weighing other UK options can also read our reports on the Chevening 2027/28 timeline and the Clarendon Scholarship at Oxford, and use the visa eligibility checker to prepare for the study visa that follows an offer.

What to do now

Check your course’s funding deadline in the University of Cambridge Course Directory, confirm that your course is on the eligible list, and work back from either date. Because the whole decision cycle runs to April 2027, applicants should also line up a second funding route in case the outcome is not positive; scholarship timelines at other universities differ, and we have not verified them here.

Chevening 2027/28: Applications Closed, What Happens Next

Applications for the Chevening 2027/28 scholarships have closed, and the Chevening 2027/28 timeline now moves to assessment and interviews. The UK government’s international scholarship programme says on its application timeline page that applications opened in August 2026 and closed in October 2026, with exact deadlines on each country’s page and the application system inaccessible afterwards. Everything below comes from that official page.

Contents

The dates after the deadline

Chevening says applications are checked against eligibility criteria from October 2026, and independent reading committees assess eligible applications from mid-October 2026 to January 2027. In mid-February 2027, embassies and high commissions shortlist candidates for interview. Interviews take place at British embassies and high commissions from March to April 2027, and candidates must upload their documents at least seven working days beforehand. Interview results are announced in mid-June 2027.

The university offer deadline

Successful candidates must submit an unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 BST (UK time) on 8 July 2027, according to Chevening. Scholars then begin their studies in the UK in September or October 2027. Because this date is fixed for everyone, candidates who are shortlisted are best placed if their university applications are already well advanced rather than started after the interview.

If you missed this round

Chevening is only one route. Our reports on the Clarendon Scholarship at Oxford and on Netherlands master’s scholarships for 2027 cover options with their own timelines, and the visa eligibility checker helps you plan the study visa that follows any offer.

A worked example

As an illustration, not a real case: a Nigerian public-health doctor who applied before the October deadline should expect no news until the mid-February shortlisting window, then should prepare documents for an interview between March and April. If she is successful in June, she has until 8 July 2027 to hold an unconditional offer, so conditional offers should be converted promptly.

What happens next

The next visible step for applicants is mid-February 2027. Chevening’s timeline is built around a single annual cycle, so a candidate who is not shortlisted has no appeal step on the page we read; the practical alternative is to look at other funded routes early rather than wait for the next opening, whose dates Chevening has not yet published. Applicants should also keep their reference providers informed, because reference letters feed into the interview stage, and keep copies of all submitted documents. Confirm your own country’s dates on its Chevening page, because the programme says deadlines and interview schedules vary by location.

Questions on Chevening 2027/28

Is Chevening 2027/28 still open?

No. Chevening says applications closed in October 2026.

When are shortlists announced?

Embassies and high commissions shortlist candidates in mid-February 2027.

When are interviews?

March to April 2027 at British embassies and high commissions.

When are results announced?

Mid-June 2027, according to the timeline.

What is the university offer deadline?

17:00 BST on 8 July 2027 for an unconditional offer.

When do scholars start?

September or October 2027.

Gates Cambridge 2027/8: First Deadline Is 14 October

Applications for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship for 2027/8 entry are open, and the first deadline is days away: US citizens resident in the USA must apply by 11:59pm UK time on Wednesday 14 October 2026, according to the Gates Cambridge timeline. Everyone else faces a Gates Cambridge scholarship deadline of either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course.

In this guide

Round 1 and Round 2

Round 1 is for US citizens resident in the USA: applications opened 11 September 2026, close 14 October 2026, with outcomes by 14 December 2026 and offers by early February 2027. Round 2 covers all other eligible applicants. Applications also opened 11 September; the deadline is Tuesday 8 December 2026 or Wednesday 6 January 2027 depending on the course, so check the University of Cambridge course directory the page points to. Round 2 outcomes come by 8 March 2027, with offers by early April and acceptance required within 72 hours.

What the scholarship is

The Gates Cambridge programme funds outstanding postgraduate students at the University of Cambridge who share a potential for social leadership. It was established in 2000 with a gift from the Gates Foundation. This page does not cover funding amounts or eligibility details, which the programme publishes separately, so confirm them on the official site.

A realistic plan for non-US applicants

Imagine a Nigerian doctor aiming for a Cambridge public health master’s. The first task is finding the course’s own deadline, because the scholarship round can depend on it. Then comes the course application itself, since the scholarship considers applicants through their departmental application. Referees, transcripts and a research or study statement usually take weeks, so working back from early December is sensible. Check our visa eligibility checker early for the student visa leg of the journey.

Key dates ahead

Panel selection for Round 1 is on 22 and 23 January 2027 and for Round 2 on 22 and 23 March 2027. For other UK deadlines see our guides to the UCAS 15 October deadline and the Commonwealth master’s scholarships.
